The biannual international Microbicides 2008 Conference would be held at New
Delhi - the historical and beautiful national capital of India- from Sunday
February 24th to Wednesday 27th, 2008. It is for the first time that the meeting
would be held in the Asian region. The earlier meetings were held at Washington
DC in 2000, Antwerp in 2002, London in 2004, and Cape Town in 2006.
There are more than 5.0 million cases of HIV in India. The prevalence rate of
HIV amongst 15 - 49 years age group is 0.9 % and a mere 0.1 % increase in the
HIV prevalence would result in addition of 0.5 millions new cases. The use of
current HIV controlled methods such as abstinence, monogamy and condoms – males
/ females, are not always feasible. Therefore, there is an urgent need to have
other HIV prevention technologies which are women initiated methods.
The conference intends to provide updates on the current state of art and the
likely future scenario about the ongoing research and development efforts in the
area of microbicides, in different parts of the world. In addition to basic
researches and innovative product development of novel microbicides, the progress
made in areas of ethics, clinical research, socio-behavioral and epidemiological
studies, accessibility and acceptability issues will be discussed. The
conference would provide a unique forum to bring together researchers, program
managers, public health workers, community and civil society organizations and
advocacy groups from developed and developing countries.
We are trying to secure funds for providing scholarships to the younger
scientists and community organizations, for facilitating their participation in
Microbicides 2008 conference, who otherwise would not be able to participate in
it.
Microbicides 2008 is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your research, your
work and your support for the ongoing efforts to develop safe and accessible
microbicides and we encourage you to submit your abstracts. We assure you that
you would enjoy the conference in the beautiful city of New Delhi and hope that
the interactions and experience of the conference will renew your efforts in
this critical field of HIV prevention.
We look forward to seeing you in New Delhi during February 2008.
